Instructions
(A walk through, step by step, on how to create designs)Recommendations:
- Create a User Account! This will give you 50MB of storage and will make creating seamless. In the instructions below, represents what is available to logged in users.
Note: Work on a larger screen (a phone may be too difficult to use paint). I also recommend making your browser full screen (F11 on Windows)
Jump to section: CropAdjustPaintCube Layout
Crop
(This page is used to both crop and scale an image.)- Choose how you would like to open an image
- From Computer: Open an image stored on your device.
- From URL: Paste URL of an image.
- From Project: Only visible to logged in users. Clicking will take you to the File Manager page, where you can view all of your saved projects and choose the one you would like to work on.
- Set "Max # of Cubes"
- This is the maximum number of cubes that you are using for this portrait, not the total that is actually used. For example, you may have 500 cubes and want to do a portrait that is a perfect square. This will scale the image to be 22x22=484 cubes, because 23x23=529, and that would be more cubes than you have. You will see what the new scaled image size will be next to the 'Crop & Scale' button.
- Draw a box to crop:
- On top of the image, use your mouse to draw a box over the area you would like to crop.
- Once the box is drawn, you can resize it by grabbing the corners.
- Crop & Scale:
- Once you have the area you would like to use selected on the picture, click the 'Scale and Crop' button.
- Save:
- To Computer: Clicking this will save to your device.
- Proceed to ADJUST page.
Note: Logged in users, when you open an image from computer or URL, it will create a New Project.
Note: The maximum number you can enter here is 3000.
Note: As you are adjusting the size of the crop, you will see the cropped size changing next to the 'Crop and Scale' button.
Note:If you don't select an area, it will simply scale without cropping.
Note: For logged in users, the cropped image is automatically saved to project.
Adjust
(This page takes orginal image, and adjusts down to specific colors on your cubes.)- Color Adjustment:
- There are 2 sliders. The top slider will change the saturation of all the colors evenly. Adjust to where you generally like the colors.
- Use the bottom slider to refine the amount of each individual color.
- Color Selector:
- Using this tool, you can add, remove, or change the order of colors you would like to use for your design;
- Save:
- To Computer: Clicking this will save to your device.
- AutoSave:
- When you make a change to the slider, this program will auto save your changes to the session that will be used on other pages.
- It is saving, wait for the box to turn Green before proceeding.
- There was an error autosaving (most likely a network error), click 'Save To Computer' so you don't lose your changes.
- Your current changes have been saved, and you can proceed to the PAINT Page.
Clicking on the color will allow you to change it.
Paint
(this paint-like page is where you fine tune your design)- Open
- This page will automatically load from the Adjust or Crop page when you navigate to it.
- From Crop: Use if you want to reload the page using the image from the Crop page.
- From Adjust: Use if you want to reload the page using the image from the Adjust page.
- Paint Colors
- When the page loads, it will grab all the colors from the image and put them in the Paint Color box. You can add colors with the Add button. First choose the color by clicking on the box next to the Add button and then click the Add button.
- Painting Image
- You will see two images when you load the page. The Painting Area Image is on the left (or top, if you are using a smaller screen). Click on the color in the Paint Color box that you would like to use. Then click on the box you want to paint that color.
- Use the 'Paint Zoom' to adjust the size of the Paint Image to your liking.
- Blender Image
- The Blender Image is on the right (or bottom, if you are using a smaller screen). This overlays the original image on top of the painted image.
- Use the 'Opacity' slider to change the opacity of the images. This will help you compare the images so you can fine tune and make adjustments.
- Use the 'Blender Zoom' slider to zoom to the desired size.
- Save:
- To Computer: Clicking this will save to your device.
- Cublelike: Creates an image of what a finished portrait would look like.
- AutoSave:
- When you make a change to the slider, this program will auto save your changes to the session that will be used on other pages.
- It is saving, wait for the box to turn Green before proceeding.
- There was an error autosaving (most likely a network error), click the 'Save To Computer' so you don't lose your changes.
- Your current changes have been saved, and you can proceed to the Cube Layout Page.
Note: If you try to open an image from the Crop page that has more than 20 colors, you must first adjust the image on the Adjust page.
Note: If you try to open an image that is using more than 3000 cubes, you must first scale the image on the Crop page.
Note: You can use a maximum of 20 colors
Note: This is where I will spend 3-4 hours on all of my designs to get the details exactly how I like them.
Note: I will open this image on my computer screen and look at it from across the room. This helps me see things that don't look natural and need to be changed.
Note: For logged in Users, auto save also saves to project on the server.
Cube Layout
(use to show the layout while you build the portrait)- Open:
- Choose if you want to open the image from either the Crop or Paint page.
- Section:
- When the page loads, it will show the entire layout. If you want to view smaller sections, choose the x and y coordinates and the number of cubes on each axis.
- Once you have selected section you want to change, click the 'Update Layout' to get that section.
Note: I find it easier to only show 2 rows at a time, so I change the '# of Cubes on the Y axis' to 2.
